Work With me

I Ignored the Warning Signs… and Lost 16 Pounds of Worms

Sixteen pounds of worms. Gone.

That's not a typo.

By the spring of 2017, sixteen of the twenty pounds of worms I had worked so hard to grow were dead.

The hardest part wasn't losing the worms. It was knowing that almost every one of those deaths could have been prevented. But to understand what happened, we need to go back a few months.

On June 26, 2016, I bought my very first pound of Red Wigglers. The supplier told me that under the right conditions they would probably double their population in about three months.

I remember thinking, "Two pounds of worms... that would be amazing."

I had a large outdoor composting bin made from wooden pallets filled with composting materials; Fresh kitchen scraps, partially composted material, and older compost.

Everything was breaking down naturally, creating a delicious buffet for the worms.

As the summer went on, I checked on them regularly, but I had no idea what was happening beneath the surface. Two and a half months later, I could hardly believe my eyes.

Every handful I picked up seemed alive. Worms everywhere. The deeper I dug, the more worms I found. It took nearly a month (Hand picking them out) to separate the worms from the castings because there were so many of them.

Guess how many pounds do you think I harvested? Two? Three? Maybe five? Not even close.

When I finished harvesting, I had twenty pounds of worms and more than twelve cubic feet of beautiful worm castings.

I couldn't believe it. I was excited. I thought, "This is incredible!"

I bought two large 76-litre totes, divided the worms between them, and continued feeding them the kitchen scraps from our home. Everything seemed to be going well. Then I started noticing something. Every now and then there would be a few dead worms on the basement floor.

I didn't think much of it. A few worms today. A few more tomorrow. Then a few more the following week. What I didn't realize was that those worms were trying to tell me something.

They were warning me. I just didn't know how to recognize the warning signs.

By the time I realized something was seriously wrong, sixteen pounds of worms were gone.

Looking back, there wasn't one big mistake. There were several small ones.

Very little airflow. Too much fresh nitrogen-rich food. Not enough carbon-rich material.

Not enough space for that many worms.

One mistake by itself might not have caused a problem.

Together, they completely changed the environment my worms were living in.

In those day the less than 5 videos on social media were show and tell with no "How To" guidance, So I started to share what I was learning.

That experience changed me. It taught me that successful worm farming isn't about luck.

It isn't even about buying the right worms. It's about understanding the system.

Once you understand what your worms need and why they need it, raising healthy worms becomes much easier.

That's why I created the Worm Farming Workshop.

It's the workshop I wish someone had offered me before I lost sixteen pounds of worms.

Because if sharing my mistakes helps you avoid making the same ones, then those sixteen pounds of worms didn't die in vain.

CHARLES

I love my worms. They are eating and reproducing really fast. I am going to one another EcoStarter kit for my niece. She would love that.

JANE

I lost my first set of worms because I keep forgetting about them. Your suggestion to keep them where I must see them and to keep a reminder on the fridge really helped. Thank you, Whytedavy.

FAQS

The questions below are grouped into three categories: Healthy Soil, Worm Farming, and Worm Business. Simply start with the group that best matches where you are today.

Do I need a worm bin if I have worms in my garden?

Garden worms play an important role in building healthy soil, but a worm bin offers different advantages.

It allows you to produce a steady supply of worm castings, reduce kitchen waste, and control both the quantity and quality of castings available for your plants.

It's also the easiest way to have fresh castings ready whenever your garden needs them.s designed to help you get started with confidence

What are worm castings and why are they so Valuable?

Worm castings (Worm manure) are one of nature's best soil amendments.

They improve soil structure, support beneficial microbial life, help plants absorb nutrients more efficiently, and encourage healthier root development. Whether you're growing vegetables, flowers, trees, or shrubs, worm castings can help create healthier, more productive soil.

Will worm castings replace natural fertilizer?

Worm castings are best thought of as a soil builder rather than a traditional fertilizer.

They help improve the health of your soil so plants can make better use of the nutrients already available.

Many gardeners use worm castings alongside other organic gardening practices for the best long-term results.

How often should I apply worm castings to the garden?

Worm casting slow releases over two months once added to the garden, so it is recommended to tap it up every two months. However, if you are using a small quantity each time or adding worm tea, then doing so more frequently is highly recommended

How much castings should I add to the garden?

Research was done on the volume of castings to use in the garden using 5%, 10% and 20% All three yield good results but it was found that 20% is quantity. However, it is not always feasible if you are buying worm castings or you are just starting out in worm farming or depending on the amount of worms you have.

If the volume of castings is not enough to cover your garden, using what you have to make worm tea will give you a wider coverage, then you can add the used castings to the garden as well.

Or, you can a little to each hole that you are panting in.
