What My Worms Were Trying to Tell Me
I stood there looking at my worm bins, wondering where everything had gone wrong. Just a few months earlier, those same bins had been full of healthy, active worms. Now, sixteen pounds of them were gone.
The hardest part wasn't losing the worms. It was realizing they had been warning me all along, and I didn't understand what they were trying to tell me. Every day, I'd find a few worms on the basement floor. "A few worms escaping isn't a big deal," I told myself. The next day there were a few more. Then a few more after that.
Because it happened so gradually, I never realized how quickly my worm population was disappearing. Looking back, I can clearly see what was happening. I had moved approximately twenty pounds of worms into two 76-litre storage totes after harvesting them from my outdoor worm bin. At the time, I thought I was doing everything right.
I kept feeding them fresh kitchen scraps every day because I wanted them to keep growing. What I didn't understand was that worms need far more than food. I didn't know they needed plenty of bedding to create a healthy living environment,
nor understand how important airflow was. I didn't realize that feeding large amounts of fresh nitrogen-rich food without enough carbon-rich bedding would eventually create problems.
Each mistake seemed small on its own. Together, they completely changed the environment my worms were living in. The truth is, worm farming wasn't difficult, but I failed because no one had explained why those things mattered. I knew what to do. I just didn't understand the system.
Losing those worms became one of the most valuable lessons I've ever learned. It changed the way I looked at worm farming forever. From that day on, I made it my mission to understand not just what worms need, but why they need it. The more I learned, the more everything started to make sense.
That's exactly why I created this workshop. It's the workshop I wish someone had offered me when I brought home my very first pound of worms. My hope is that by sharing what I've learned—the successes, the mistakes, and the lessons behind them—you'll understand your worm system with confidence and avoid many of the costly mistakes I made along the way.
